How to play Whist

Whist is played by four players in two teams. Each player is dealt 13 cards from a standard deck. You and your partner sit across from each other. The last card dealt determines the trump suit, which beats all others in that hand.

Taking Tricks

The player to the dealer's left leads the first trick by playing any card. Each player must follow suit if possible.

What if you can’t?

  • You can play any card, including a trump.
  • The highest card of the lead suit wins unless a trump card is played.
  • If multiple trumps are played, the highest trump wins.
  • The winner of each trick leads the next.

  • Scoring

There are 13 tricks per round.

Your team scores 1 point for every trick won over six. The first team to exactly 7 points wins the game.

Go over 7? You're back where you started.

    About Whist

Whist is a classic English trick-taking card game built for partnerships and smart plays, not flashy gimmicks. Played by four people split into two teams, it’s all about reading the table, anticipating moves, and working in sync without saying a word. If you've enjoyed Spades or Hearts, Whist brings a clean, elegant version of that same strategic thrill.

Every hand in the Whist card game starts fresh with a rotating trump suit, making sure no two rounds ever feel the same. With a standard 52-card deck and straightforward mechanics, it’s easy to learn but rewards memory, timing, and intuition. Whether you're new to card games or a seasoned player, Whist finds that sweet spot between simplicity and depth.

This free online version of the Whist game lets you sharpen your skills against the computer, hop into multiplayer matches, or invite friends to private tables. Custom themes, detailed stats, and features like TRAM (a handy auto-win tool when your cards can sweep the board) make this browser-based version feel sharp and modern without losing its timeless charm.
